How to Catch Subscriber Typos + Improve Deliverability

Sometimes readers try to subscribe to your list but make a mistake when entering their email address. When that happens, not only do you miss out on a new subscriber, but continuing to email invalid email addresses could hurt your email deliverability. Sometimes, your email provider can detect a bounce error and remove that invalid email address from your list, but other times they can’t detect the issue, so you’ll end up with dead weight on your list.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to automate checking your new subscribers’ email addresses for common typos so you can fix them and improve deliverability.

Resources

  • Zapier — Use this tool to check new subscriber emails on ConvertKit.
  • Mailcheck — If you’re comfortable with tech or you have a tech person you can pass this along to, this is a bit of code you can add to your site that will check for typos in the moment your new subscriber is filling out a form on your site, then prompt them to fix the typo right then and there.
  • ‘Oops I fixed your email’ template — Here’s a template you can use as a starting point for a message to your new subscribers who had a typo in their email address. Feel free to use this as a starting point, then tweak it so you’re not using it verbatim and so it doesn’t sound out of character for how you typically write:

Recently, you entered your email address at my web site, <site name>, to sign up for my weekly newsletter.

But unfortunately, it looks like my messages to you have been bouncing due to a typo in the email address. I noticed the issue and fixed it, so let’s try again!

In a few minutes, you’ll get another message from me, welcoming you to the <site name> community. 😊
